Withdrawal of Troops from Afghanistan Marked in Chisinau



CHISINAU, February 15, 2012 — Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta attended Wednesday, February 15, the events dedicated to the 23rd anniversary since the Soviet troop withdrawal from Afghanistan held at the memorial “Feciorilor Patriei — sfinta amintire” from Riscani sector of Chisinau.

The Minister of Defense laid flowers to the monument along with the Government authorities and local public administration.

A moment of silence was kept by the participants to remember heroes dead in war. the event brought together hundreds of people, mostly war veterans.

In the morning, the veterans took part in a commemoration meeting in Marii Adunari Nationale Square and a divine service held at the Metropolitan Cathedral to remember the Afghanistan heroes.

The Republic of Moldova Government made the decision to include the Commemoration Day of Soldiers dead in Afghan War marked February 15 in the official holiday list. The initiative was supported by over eight thousand members of the Union of Afghanistan War Veterans.

Official data show nearly 12 500 Moldovan citizens took part in the Afghan war held during 1979-1989. 301 of them died, four were declared missing and 257 are invalids.

The Soviet troop withdrawal from Afghanistan started in 1987. The last units were removed in February 1989.
