Assessment of Defense and Security Reform



CHISINAU, May 2, 2012 — Republic of Moldova is currently under transition to defense and security reform and the NATO assistance under development is a welcome step in the defense area, Deputy Minister of Defense Igor Panfile stated during the bilateral consultations with the experts of the PfP Planning and Review Process (PARP) held Wednesday, May 2, at the Ministry of Defense HQ.

The Chief of Defense Policy and Planning Department, LTC Vladimir Ababii, stated NATO experts will have some bilateral consultations in Chisinau based on the assessment of implementation of the Republic of Moldova partnership goals. The quoted source also specified that, during the work sessions, the experts will also discuss some aspects on Republic of Moldova — NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan.

“The topics of the bilateral talks are multidimensional covering both national defense and security areas. They are as follows: consolidation of Republic of Moldova’s counter-terrorism capacities, improvement of democratic control of the defense sector, including by revising the roles and responsibilities of the basic state institutions in charge of the issue”, Vladimir Ababii stated. “The bilateral meetings also include aspects on defense and budget planning, professional development of the National Army, development of the corps of non-commissioned officers, personnel management, improvement of security and ammunition area, and others”.

The work visit of the group of NATO experts based on PfP Planning and Review Process (PARP) to the Republic of Moldova is held during Mau 2-4. The goal of the bilateral consultations deals with the review of 2011 defense and security reforms.

Republic of Moldova joined Partnership for Peace (PfP) Program on March 16, 1994.
