Over 1500 Explosives Destroyed at Bulboaca

CHISINAU, May 24, 2012 — The National Army and “Norwegian People’s Aid” Non-governmental organization carry out the second phase of the pilot project on palletizing and categorizing obsolete ammunition May 21-25 at Bulboaca Military Training Area.

According to LTC Mihail Semionov, Commander of the National Army EOD Troops, during this stage, the engineers (EOD) intend to liquidate 1500 artillery projectiles and grenade launcher projectiles primarily planned for being destroyed.

The projectiles stored at Bulboaca were made during 1967-1969 and have been used for 30-35 years.

The pilot-project is part of a Memorandum signed May 4 by the Ministry of Defense and “Norwegian People’s Aid” that provides the implementation of a program on explosion risk mitigation at the National Army ammunition depots, as well as the development of cooperation in maintaining and raising the level of security in ammunition warehouses, and lowering the risk to the surrounding community.

The memorandum also highlights the cooperation of the Norwegian organization with the military institution in term of the modification of current guidelines and norms regulating the mine and weapons management in the National Army in order to meet international standards.
