Vitalie Marinuta Meets With the Russian Defense Minister’s Advisor Valerii Evnevici

Chisinau, October 18, 2012 — At the request of the Russian military authorities, Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta met with the Russian Federation Defense Minister’s Advisor, Col. Gen. Valerii Evnevici, that inspected the Russian troops contingent from the Eastern districts of the Republic of Moldova.

During the meeting, Vitalie Marinuta expressed the Moldovan Ministry’s concern about the latest events recorded within the Russian peacekeepers’ contingent, mainly focusing on the insertion of military technical equipment and weapons in the area, that are not typical of the troops engaged in peacekeeping operations.

Gen. Evnevici informed the Moldovan Defense Minister about the goal of his visit to the Republic of Moldova, as well as the activities carried out by the Russian military authorities within their forces temporarily established in the Eastern districts of our country. The Russian official stated the heavy infantry weapons were taken from the warehouses and brought to the Security Area because of the error of some decision-making factors of the Russian troops temporarily deployed to the Eastern part of the Republic of Moldova. The representative of the Russian Minister of Defense assured that, in the future, the Russian authorities will announce the Moldovan party on time about the changes or transportation of technical equipment and weapons and even invite them to the very place.

Gen. Evnevici informed Vitalie Marinuta he had been assigned as responsible for the settlement of the military problems of the Russian task force group, including the planning and evacuation of some material goods, including 8 helicopters from Tiraspol airfield. Thus, the Russian official said that the repairing and renovation works of the military airport from Tiraspol will be finished in two or three days. According to Evnevici, the repairing is necessary to evacuate by air the helicopters and other material goods of the Russian contingent temporarily established on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

Thus, the Moldovan Defense Minister pointed out that all these changes, including the resumption of the activity of Tiraspol airfield, may be done only with the agreement and under the control of the Republic of Moldova constitutional authorities. Vitalie Marinuta said that, the Republic of Moldova leadership does its best to diminish the military factor in the Security Area, as well as maintain a trustful and transparent relationship among the parties engaged in the peacekeeping mission. According to the Minister, the change or the insertion of some weapons or technical systems in the Security Area without the approval of one of the parties cannot raise the level of credibility among the participants in the peaceful settlement of the conflict.

During the meeting, Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta proposed the Russian official to finish the second phase of Protocol No. 486 as of May 27, 2003 on the removal of the armored vehicles from the Security Area, which the Russian authorities have not done yet. At the same time, the Russian party was also asked to review the initiative to remove all the large caliber infantry ammunition, as well as anti-tank weapons from the Security Area. Vitalie Marinuta also invited the delegation of the Russian Defense Ministry to visit Bulboaca Military Training Ground.
