The National Army destroys old ammunition

Chisinau, February 8th, 2013 — the National Army will conduct with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) an ammunition destruction program. An agreement to this effect was reached today by the Deputy Chief of Staff for providing resources, Colonel Andrei Şarban, and a group of representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), within a working visit to Moldova. The event was attended by the OSCE representative in our country, Maurice Dunand.

The parties have agreed to sign in April this year a Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the project to reduce the stock of expired dangerous ammunition. According to Colonel Şarban, in September 2013, during two weeks, with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross several actions will be carried out, such as destruction of aviation bombs, testing and development of the technological process of neutralization and staff training in technology of destruction.

A study of the technical condition of the National Army ammunition shows that currently, there are considerable amounts of obsolete munitions remaining from the former Soviet Union period. They are dangerous and cannot be stored for longer duration and therefore need to be used or destroyed in no time.
