Chisinau, April 27, 2013 — Ministry of Defense organized today a public ceremony to mark the National Flag Day held within the defense institution’s compound.

The event brought together Members of Parliament, ministers, servicemembers, veterans, pupils and citizens of Chisinau.

The sanctification of the National Flag, the raising of the Tricolor, the display of historical flags and the marching of the Honor Guard were the key elements of the event celebrated by the Ministry of Defense for the third time. Before the flag raising ceremony, acting Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta honored the National Flag under the chords of the Republic of Moldova’s anthem.

„The National Flag Day is a significant moment for National Army servicemembers. By honoring it, we bear true faith and allegiance. We accepted to wear it on the left arm, next to our heart. Thus, we made it the witness to the challenging history of Moldovan army. Our National Flag inspired us with pride, honor, respect, desire of unity and independence”, Vitalie Marinuta said.

Defense Minister stated that the Moldovan Tricolor was carried with pride to Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, Cote d’Ivoire, Georgia, Kirgizstan, the United States of America. He assured Moldovan servicemembers that their mission of messengers of peace is a special one entrusted only to special people. „I am certain that soon, the number of Moldovan servicemembers to participate in peacekeeping missions under the colours of the national flag will grow. At that moment, we will carry it with all our respect”, Vitalie Marinuta pointed out.

Ion Hadirca, MP of the Republic of Moldova’s first Parliament, signatory of the Declaration of Independence, who attended the event, spoke about the historical development of the State Flag. “23 years ago, on April 27, I was one of the voters of the national flag. We honored the tricolor for those who fought for the independence of our country”, Ion Hadirca said.

In his turn, Gheorghe Vrabie, author of the Republic of Moldova Coat of Arms, stated that each citizen and each state has the right to be proud of his/its flag. We, Moldovans, are privileged as far as this issue is concerned, because the three colours of the flag – blue, yellow and red – are the main colours of the rainbow and the main colours of the chromatic palette”, Gheorghe Vrabie mentioned.

Today flag raising ceremonies were held in all the military units of the National Army from Chisinau, Balti, Cahul and Ungheni garrisons. Meanwhile conscripts attended educational events on the history of the National Flag and various exhibitions.

The National Flag Day is marked on April 27. The day was established by the Parliament on April 23, 2010. The Tricolor was declared official state flag on April 27, 1990, by the MPs of the first Legislative body.
