Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta Meets with Russian Counterpart Sergey Shoygu

MOSCOW, May 23, 2013 — Acting Defense Minister, Vitalie Marinuta, met today with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Shoygu, and discussed about regional security and peacekeeping operations in the Eastern districts of Republic of Moldova.

During the meeting, Vitalie Marinuta spoke about Republic of Moldova’s viewpoint about the need of shifting the current peacekeeping operation in the region to an international civilian mission. According to Marinuta, this change is part of the European community’s efforts to enhance regional security and consolidate the dialogue on Transnistrian conflict resolution.

First, Defense Minister proposed the Russian side to withdraw the armored vehicles from the Security Zone checkpoints, in compliance with the agreements previously signed by all the actors engaged in this mission.

In his turn, Sergey Shoygu revealed the need to maintain permanent dialogue and develop an efficient mechanism to resolve the situation of peacekeeping contingents in the Security Zone.

The Russian Minister of Defense also said that his Moldovan counterparts’ proposal about withdrawal of armored vehicles from the Security Zone would be examined by the institution he is the leader of. The official specified that the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation would not increase personnel and military equipment of the contingent temporarily established on the territory of Republic of Moldova.

Shoygu pointed out the Russian Ministry of Defense’s availability to discuss all the existing problems between the two sides in order to insure peace and regional security, as well as build bilateral trustworthy relationship.

Minister Vitalie Marinuta invited his Russian counterpart to visit Republic of Moldova.

Acting Defense Minister, Vitalie Marinuta, attends the international conference “Military and Political Aspects of European Security” held within May 22-24, in Moscow, Russia. The conference brought together Defense ministers and representatives of defense institutions from over 50 countries, including USA and Canada, NATO, OSCE and EU officials, as well as other international organizations.
