Moldovan-Ukrainian Exercise “Nord-2013” Is Over

CHISINAU, July 9, 2013 — About 70 soldiers of the Moldovan and Ukrainian militaries participated July 8-11 at the Moldovan-Ukrainian bilateral peacekeeping Exercise “Nord — 2013”, that closed today at the Training Center of Brigade “Moldova”, in Balti.

According to the Head of Joint Training and Doctrine Directorate, Col. Igor Gadirca, such exercises are useful for the training of Moldovan servicemembers in compliance with international standards. “The servicemembers of both armies demonstrated maximum interoperability and professionalism in peacekeeping missions. This fact guaranteed the successful achievement of ‘Nord’ exercise goal. I am confident that this cooperation will go on within other bilateral peacekeeping exercises, conducted in our country and abroad”, Col. Gadirca said.

The commander of the Ukrainian contingent, LTC Andrei Voilokov, stated that the participants in the exercise had the possibility to exchange experience and act together in different situations. “Moldovan servicemembers have a rich experience in peacekeeping forces’ activity in the Security Zone of Republic of Moldova. We have experience in peacekeeping missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo. We learned many important things from each other that will definitely be of great use for our further activity”, LTC Voilokov stated.

According to Col. Valeriu Chilaru, head of “Nord-2013” exercise, during the event, Moldovan and Ukrainian peacekeepers carried out missions at six training sites, including tactical peacekeeping missions like medical evacuation, patrol, escort, guard of strategic sites and resistance in case of attack, as well as control at checkpoints.

The goal of the exercise is to train military contingents for participation in joint peacekeeping operations, as well as exchange experience in term of methods of training for joint missions as part of Joint Peacekeeping Forces.

This year, Exercise “Nord” brought together 40 soldiers from Brigade “Moldova”, Balti, and 28 servicemembers of the 28th Brigade from Cernomorskoe, Odessa.

The Peacekeeping Exercise “Nord 2013” is based on the bilateral cooperation plan between the Moldovan and Ukrainian Defense Ministries for the current year.

The last bilateral exercise of this kind was held in 2007, at Bulboaca Military Training Ground.
