Moldovan-American Meeting at the Ministry of Defense



CHISINAU, August 14, 2013 — Defense Minister, Vitalie Marinuta, met today with the official of the US European Command, Rear Admiral Patrick A. Piercey.

The parties discussed about the current relations of the National Army and American military and the main achievements in the modernization and reform of the defense and security sector.

Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta appreciated the US assistance in the development of strategic partnership between the two militaries and contribution of American party in building a positive image of the defense institution. “Despite the austere budget the National Army currently has, we do our best to raise the professional level of our staff and improve the activity of the military institution. Due to the financial support provided by the US Government, our servicemembers had the possibility to study abroad, within some educational programs. Humanitarian and social projects carried out in our country with the American support are part of the wide variety of activities designed to raise citizens’ awareness about the army”, Defense Minister said.

Vitalie Marinuta spoke about the performance of National Army servicemembers in world peacekeeping operations and expressed his confidence that the Moldovan-American cooperation will enhance. The Minister of Defense specified that the National Army will keep meeting its military education, peacekeeping and professionalization goals.

Rear Adm. Patrick A. Piercey appreciated the National Army efforts to enhance Moldovan-American bilateral relations, revealing the dynamic and multidimensional character of cooperation. “The National Army has progress in term of defense reform due to the successful implementation of joint projects in the military, social and humanitarian areas, financed by the USA. We appreciate your country’s global security goals, through participation in different world peacekeeping missions”, the American official said.

During his stay in Republic of Moldova, August 14-16, Rear Adm. Patrick A. Piercey will visit Bulboaca Training Center, the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion and Special Forces Battalion “Fulger”.

Moldovan-American defense cooperation is based on the Memorandum of military cooperation between the two militaries, signed on December 4, 1995.
