National Army Servicemembers Remember Soldiers Fallen in Second World War

Chisinau, May 9, 2014 — National Army servicemembers attended today the events held throughout the country on the Victory Day.

In Chisinau, Defense Minister, Valeriu Troenco, along with the heads of National Army divisions laid flowers at “Eternitate” Memorial and participated in the commemoration meeting. The event brought together state authorities, war veterans, representatives of embassies and international missions accredited to Republic of Moldova, as well as thousands of citizens that remembered soldiers fallen in Second World War.

President of the Republic of Moldova, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Nicolae Timofti, stated: “We mark today the end of the Second World War. Mankind has paid an enormous price for the unconsciousness of some dictators who started the bloodiest world conflagration in the mid 20th century.

Millions of people lost their lives in that war. Among them, were hundreds of thousands of our servicemembers and civilians. Fathers, grandparents and grand grandparents supported both, the Soviet and Romanian Army in war. But for us today they are equal. We must honor their memory for the sacrifice they made in the name of peace and the future of their descendants.

Prime-Minister, Iurie Leanca said the sacred duty of the state is to remember the fallen soldiers and take care of veterans. “You are those who marked the glory in the history of mankind, being forever devoted to the noblest values such as, heroism and courage, patience, strength, and honor, commitment and dignity, faith and love to the country. Together, dear veterans, we bring a tribute to all those who went through the terrors of Second World War and who contributed to the victory over fascism through their daily efforts”, Iurie Leanca stated.

Within the event, Guard Battalion servicemembers gave three-shot rifle salute for the heroes.

On the Victory Day and the day of commemoration of heroes fallen for the independence of our homeland, similar events were held at “Capul de pod Serpeni” (Serpeni Bridgehead). National Army servicemembers, war veterans and representatives of local public authorities laid flowers at the eternal light, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and kept a moment of silence.

At the same time, in all the garrisons of the country, National Army servicemembers, along with the local public authorities, carried out activities dedicated to the 69th anniversary since the victory over fascism.
