Moldovan – Hungarian Defense Cooperation Discussed at the Ministry of Defense

Chisinau, May 27, 2014 — Defense Minister, Valeriu Troenco, met with the Ambassador of Hungary to Republic of Moldova, Mátyás Szilágyi.

The officials discussed about the current bilateral relations, focusing on the reform process of the security and defense sector in our country and the joint projects in the military history area.

Valeriu Troenco and Mátyás Szilágyi also discussed about the cemeteries from Republic of Moldova and Hungary, where soldiers from both countries are buried in and agreed on conducting some events to remember the dead soldiers.

There are currently three military cemeteries of Hungarian soldiers on the territory of the Republic of Moldova in Balti, Tighina and Chisinau. In 2012, a monument was inaugurated in Balti representing a cross — the symbol of Jesus Christ resurrection — that contains the following message: “To the memory of the Hungarian military and civil prisoners dead in Second World War in Balti”.

Moldovan-Hungarian defense relations are based on the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed on November 25, 1997.
