Sweden and Republic of Moldova Reinforce Defense Cooperation



Chisinau, June 13, 2014 — Defense Minister, Valeriu Troenco, met today with the ambassador of Kingdom of Sweden to Chisinau, Ingrid Tersman. The parties discussed issues of bilateral cooperation between the two states, focusing on identifying possibilities to expand it, including the security and defense area.

The Minister of Defense appreciated the support provided by Sweden to Republic of Moldova in different areas and expressed his hope that, from now on, the support will concern the defense system too, that will significantly contribute to the modernization and reform of the National Army.

Valeriu Troenco mentioned the need of the defense institutions of the two states to sign a cooperation agreement in the defense area, an initiative supported by the Swedish official as well.

Ingrid Tersman stated that Republic of Moldova can count on Sweden support and experience in the European integration process. The ambassador pointed out her country’s readiness to support the Republic of Moldova’s defense system in the areas that requires assistance through implementation of programs and projects favourable for both parties.

The Moldovan-Swedish defense cooperation includes the training of the National Army servicemembers, that started in 2004, within the courses conducted as part of the Operational Capabilities Concept (OCC) of the Armed Forces of Kingdom of Sweden (SWEDINT). Until now, 15 representatives of the National Army attended at such courses in Sweden.
