OSCE Experts at the Ministry of Defense



Chisinau, July 15, 2014 — Defense Minister, Valeriu Troenco, and Commander of the National Army, Col. Igor Gorgan, met with the group of experts of the donor countries within the projects conducted with the OSCE Mission’s support in Republic of Moldova.

The Minister of Defense thanked the OSCE Mission for the support provided in funding the projects with major impact on Republic of Moldova citizens’ safety. " Since 2010, when the Memorandum between the Ministry of Defense and OSCE regarding the implementation of the Complex Program on Small Arms and Light Weapons, and conventional weapons, has been signed and until now, your country has regularly supported our institution,, through some concrete projects good for both, the National Army and the civil society“, Valeriu Troenco said.

In this regard, the Minister of Defense appreciated the OSCE contribution to the disposal of obsolete ammunition, including the disposal of fragmented and OFAB aviation bombs, as well as 5V28 missiles. Valeriu Troenco also noted the OSCE involvement in National Army warehouses renovation, by installing new security systems, as well as the organization of the training course “Management of Ammunition and Weapons Stockpile”.

Dieter Schneider, the OSCE representative, said that Republic of Moldova, through the Ministry of Defense, has launched programs and initiatives to reduce the risk of explosion at the National Army warehouses, thus increasing security and safety level in this area.

The quoted source said OSCE would keep supporting Republic of Moldova, specifying that with the donor coutries’ support, the organization would establish financial means to continue the projects started, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Defense and OSCE in Republic of Moldova, on the implementation of the Complex Program on Small Arms and Light Weapons was signed on October 28, 2014.

The group of experts of the donor countries within the Program on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) makes an assessment visit in the National Army, within July 12-16.
