Moldovan-American Meeting at the Ministry of Defense



CHISINAU, February 16, 2015 — State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Aurel Fondos, met today with Legislative Director at the Office of Senator James E. Risch and the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Cristopher Socha.

The discussions were centered on the Moldovan-American cooperation in different sectors, including the military field, with a focus on bilateral achievements and future cooperation priorities.

Aurel Fondos mentioned that the United States of America contributed significantly to the development of the defense and security sector of the Republic of Moldova through various modernization and assistance programs, scholarships for the Moldovan service members in American educational institutions, as well as through joint social projects designed for the local population.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense also appreciated the contribution of the US Government to the training of National Army staff for international peacekeeping missions in accordance with international standards, and to the logistic support and transportation of Moldovan military within the KFOR peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.

At the end of the meeting, Aurel Fondos and Christopher Socha expressed their conviction that the Moldovan-American cooperation will enhance by carrying out new projects that would be beneficial for both armies.

The Moldovan-American defense cooperation is based on the Memorandum “Regarding the cooperation in the military area” signed by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the US Department of Defense, on December 4, 1995.
