Chernobyl Disaster Victims Commemorated in Chisinau



CHISINAU, April 27, 2015 — Deputy Minister of Defense, Ana Vasilachi, attended, on April 26, the commemoration event of the victims of Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. The event was organized at Chernobyl victims’ memorial on Trandafirilor street, Botanica district.

Ana Vasilachi mentioned that among the thousands of people mobilized for the liquidation of the disaster consequences there were over 3,500 Moldovan citizens, 3,000 of whom where reservists, including 231 officers mobilized by military commissariats, 400 servicemembers, 70 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and 500 civilians. “Today, after 29 years since the technogenic disaster, I express my compassion towards our 560 fellow citizens, servicemembers and civilians, who died in this catastrophe, and also towards thousands of families of the participants, who are still suffering from the consequences of this tragedy”, said the Deputy Minister.

This year, the Association “Chernobyl Union from Moldova”, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, organized a series of events to mark the 29th anniversary since Chernobyl disaster, such as laying of flowers at the Sculptural Complex dedicated to the Chernobyl victims, the Memory March, and a religious ceremony. Also, Ana Vasilachi met with the widows of the participants at the liquidation of Chernobyl disaster consequences. The Deputy Defense Minister expressed the gratitude and support of the National Army to the 20 ladies.
