Military Engineers – 25 Years of Demining Missions

CHISINAU, October 20, 2017 — Engineer Battalion “Codru” from Negresti celebrated today the 25th anniversary during a ceremony held within the unit. The event was attended by representatives of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and National Army, former Battalion commanders, veterans, students, and parents.

Deputy Defense Minister Gheorghe Galbura awarded National Army medals and diplomas to a group of engineers, as a sign of appreciation for their activity and excellent fulfillment of service duty.

“During these 25 years, the Moldovan engineers proved that they are professionals who are dedicated to the military service. The engineers are service members who fulfill war missions in peacetime, which is proved by the tens of thousands of explosive objects neutralized by the service members of the Engineer Battalion throughout our country, as well as in international missions in Iraq and Kosovo, where their performance has been appreciated by high-level experts and commanders”, said Gheorghe Galbura.

Interim Commander of the Battalion, LTC Gheorghe Racu, mentioned that the unit’s engineers are daily engaged in demining missions throughout Moldova, where there is found unexploded ammunition dating back to World War II. The source specified that, this year, the engineer teams were called in over 100 times, disposing of 527 explosive objects in various villages and towns.

The activity continued with a wrestling exercises program and the guests had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the unit’s special equipment and vehicles.

Engineer Battalion “Codru” was established on October 16, 1992.
