The Last Batch of Pesticides Evacuated from ATU Gagauzia



CHISINAU, May 4, 2018 — Over 60 tons of pesticides stored on the territory of the ATU Gagauzia were evacuated today in order to be destroyed in Poland. On this occasion, an event was organized in Gaidar village, Ceadir-Lunga district. The event was attended by General State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Radu Burduja, the Ambassadors of Romania and Poland in our country, and representatives of local public authorities.

According to Col. Mariana Grama, manager of the NATO/PfP Trust Fund Project on the disposal of dangerous pesticides and chemicals in the Republic of Moldova, the pesticides were collected from Besghioz, Gaidar, Joltai, Cazaclia, Chiriet-Lunga, Copceac and Tomai villages and stored in the central warehouse from Gaidar village, Ceadir-Lunga district.

The source specified that the over 60 tons of dangerous chemical substances were prepared for evacuation through repacking, palletizing, marking, fixing, weighing by a team consisting of six service members from “Stefan cel Mare” Brigade and representatives of E.S. Field Services Veolia Company from Great Britain and members of the Emergency Situations Committee of ATU Gagauzia.

The pesticides are to be transported to SARPI Dabrowa Gornicza plant from Poland in order to be thermally destroyed.

These actions are conduced in the framework of the NATO/PfP Trust Fund Project on the disposal of dangerous pesticides and chemicals in the Republic of Moldova. So far, the Ministry of Defense transported to Poland and destroyed 957 tons of pesticide waste out of the planned 1,269 tons from Anenii Noi, Basarabeasca, Cahul, Calarasi, Comrat, Donduseni, Glodeni, Ialoveni, Leova, Falesti, Soroca and Taraclia districts.
