Eugen Sturza and Dafina Gercheva Discuss the Cooperation between Ministry of Defense and UN



CHISINAU, May 24, 2018 — Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza met today with Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for the Republic of Moldova.

The officials talked about the current stage of cooperation between the UN representation and our country, with a focus on joint projects implemented in the Republic of Moldova and the participation of National Army service members in UN stabilization and peacekeeping operations.

Eugen Sturza referred to the defense institution’s cooperation with UN and the support offered by UNDP in reforming the security and defense sector.

Minister Sturza appreciated the UNDP assistance in implementing important projects aimed to enhance the institutional capacities of the Ministry of Defense in order to fulfill the established international commitments, acquire modern equipment, and reconstruct the National Army infrastructure in compliance with the National Defense Strategy’s provisions.

The Minister of Defense also mentioned the organization’s contribution, through UN Women, to the implementation of UN Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace, and Security” on national level, with a focus on building gender equality by using the sector’s norms, standards, and best practices.

Eugen Sturza informed Dafina Gercheva about the defense sector’s reformation which includes the National Army’s professionalization and an intensified participation of Moldovan military in ensuring global security within UN operations.

The UN Resident Coordinator appreciated the performance of Moldovan officers in UN missions in Sudan, South Sudan, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Central African Republic, Kosovo, and Georgia. Dafina Gercheva also said that UN will keep being open for cooperation with the National Army and is available to offer support within projects related to the defense and security sector, as well as the Moldovan citizens’ safety.

In 2018, the National Army will mark 15 years of participation in UN missions. On this occasion, the Ministry of Defense will organize a series of events on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers that is celebrated on May 29. These actions will have the objective to inform the society about out country’s contribution within the stabilization and peacekeeping operations.
