Military Attaché of Greece Pays Visit to Ministry of Defense

CHISINAU, July 6, 2018 — General State Secretary, Radu Burduja, met today with the military attaché of the Hellenic Republic in the Republic of Moldova based in Bucharest, Navy Cpt. Ioannis Sarrigiannis, at the Ministry of Defense HQ.

The officials talked about the current stage of the cooperation relations between the two armies and the prospects of their reinforcement. Other issues discussed were the regional situation, the defense institution’s participation in international programs and initiatives, and the reform started by the Ministry of Defense for the National Army’s professionalization.

Radu Burduja highlighted the defense institution’s interest in Greece’s experience in the process of reforming the National Army and of participating in the Defense Capacity Building Initiative to which our country has been accepted in September, 2014.

Radu Burduja informed Ioannis Sarrigiannis about the objectives of the Ministry of Defense for 2018, including the adjustment and approval of the strategic documents — National Defense Strategy and Military Strategy, the National Army’s professionalization, and the consolidation of bilateral military relations with the external partners.

The General State Secretary also appreciated the support and contribution of the Hellenic Government to the training of Moldovan military in educational institutions from Greece, where, so far, 47 National Army service members and public servants have studied.

Navy Cpt. Ioannis Sarrigiannis stated that, as military attaché of Greece, he will make every effort for the strengthening of the military cooperation between the two countries by examining opportunities of increasing the number of scholarships for Moldovan service members in Greek high education institutions. The official also specified that he will continue to support the military institution’s reformation process and will offer support within the assistance projects.

The Moldovan-Greek military cooperation has started in September, 2003 when the Military Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of National Defense of the Hellenic Republic was signed in Athens.
