New Identification Cards for War Veterans

CHISINAU, July 12, 2018 — A group of war veterans received today new identification cards during a ceremony organized at the Center of Military History and Culture. The ID cards were handed by Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza, Minister of Internal Affairs Alexandru Jizdan and Director of the Security and Intelligence Service Vasile Botnari.

Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza congratulated the 54 veterans of the force structures on receiving the new ID cards and thanked them for their courage and sacrifice during the armed conflicts. “This is a first step for the Government towards improving the war veterans’ social protection. There will be more actions aimed to offer social benefits, tax exemptions, and other opportunities for those who fought with a weapon in their hand”, said Eugen Sturza.

Minister Sturza also appreciated the activity of the Interdepartmental Committee led by the Ministry of Defense that developed the legal framework of this area and implemented it.

In 2018, 15,000 new ID cards will be made and the process will include several stages. Thus, by the end of the 2nd trimester 4,900 cards will be printed and by the end of the 3rd trimester — 4,900 cards. Other 4,900 cards will be made by the end of the 4th trimester (no later than December 20). By December 31, 2020, the process of substituting the old cards will be finalized.

The action of substituting the old identification cards of war veterans with a new type is part of the implementation of the Plan “Memory, Honor, Respect” aimed to build trust and to improve social and legal protection of war veterans who participated in the Afghan War and in the War for the defense of the Republic of Moldova’s territorial integrity and independence, approved by Government Provision No. 52-d as of April 19, 2016.

The decision on the war veterans’ identification cards was approved at the Cabinet of Minister’ meeting of February 22, 2018.
