Reinforcement of Bilateral Security and Defense Cooperation Discussed by Eugen Sturza in Halifax

CHISINAU, November 19, 2018 — The reinforcement of bilateral security and defense cooperation has been discussed by Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza with a series of dignitaries from Canada, Turkey, and Kingdom of Sweden in Halifax. The meetings took place in the framework of the 10th Halifax International Security Forum organized during November 16-18, 2018.

Eugen Sturza talked with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Ian Shugart, Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defense, James Bezan, Minister of National Defense of Turkey, Hulusi Akar, and Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, Gen. Micael Bydén about Moldova’s commitment to continue to develop partnerships and to strengthen cooperation through projects of mutual interest aimed to build security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe and in the region of the Black Sea Basin.

During the Halifax Forum, Eugen Sturza met also with the Canadian Minister of Defense Harjit Singh Sajjan. The officials talked about the regional security, a more intense participation of service members in building global peace, and an increased presence of women in the defense sector in the framework of implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security”.

Eugen Sturza expressed his interest in reinforcing cooperation on both bilateral and multilateral levels by launching initiatives that would benefit the armies of the participant nations.

The talks with foreign dignitaries offered the opportunity to exchange opinions regarding the development of the security environment in the Republic of Moldova, the current risks and threats faced by neighborhood countries, including the hybrid warfare elements. Thus, Minister Sturza expressed the conviction that the interest towards our country, as an important stability and security contributor within Eastern Europe, will increase and, in this regard, urged the officials to actively support Moldova’s strategic messages.

The foreign dignitaries expressed the availability to support Moldova’s defense efforts by offering support and expertise in implementing the National Army’s modernization reforms, intensifying participation of Moldovan soldiers, alongside other armies, and increasing interoperability by using NATO standards, within joint exercises and missions.

At the end of the meetings, Minister Sturza thanked the officials for the constant assistance in building defense capabilities.

Eugen Sturza paid a visit to Canada within November 16-18, where he attended the Halifax International Security Forum. The presence of the Ministry of Defense’s delegation to this event was ensured by the contribution of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Canada.
