CIS Defense Ministers Meet in Soci



CHISINAU, July 08 — Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta attended the meeting of the Ministers’ of Defense Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member states, held July 6-7, 2011, in Soci, Russia.

The Ministers of Defense from 11 CIS states examined over 20 issues related to military institutions’ scientific, sports, military, cultural and educational cooperation. The participants concluded a few joint projects implementation documents. Republic of Moldova did not sign any document adopted by the CIS Defense Ministers’ Council, for it is not part of the collective defense system working within the Commonwealth of Independent States.

While in Soci, Vitalie Marinuta, who attended the meeting as an observer, discussed about the bilateral cooperation with his counterparts from Ukraine, Tajikistan, Armenia and other states. Vitalie Marinuta and the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Myhailo Ejel, inquired into a few problems of technical-military cooperation between the two militaries, as well as the possibility of implementing some joint projects on peacekeeping forces’ readiness, training of personnel engaged in humanitarian or peacekeeping operations.

The officials agreed to develop and propose a few measures to be included in the 2012 Bilateral Cooperation Plan between the Ministries of Defense of Moldova and Ukraine.

During the meeting, the Council of CIS Defense Ministers decided the next summit of leaders of military departments from the Commonwealth of Independent States would be held at the end of 2011 in Kazakhstan.
