Moldovan-British Dialogue at Ministry of Defense



CHISINAU, January 16, 2019 — General State Secretary, Radu Burduja, met with the new Director of Euro-Atlantic Security Policy of the British Ministry of Defense, Nick Gurr.

Radu Burduja congratulated Nick Gurr on his appointment and wished him success during his mandate.

The two officials talked about regional security, the Moldovan-British military partnership and the identification of new cooperation opportunities.

Radu Burduja informed Nick Gurr about the actions that have been undertaken so far and that were aimed to the modernization of the National Army and about the implementation of the projects and programs deriving from the defense institution’s strategic goals, including the Defense Capacity Building Initiative (DCBI).

In this regard, the General State Secretary referred to the process of substituting the mandatory military service with the contract-based military service that the Government of the Republic of Moldova has started in 2018, the professional development of the privates, sergeants, and NCOs staff, as well as Moldova’s contribution to the global peacekeeping efforts.

Radu Burduja also underscored the British Government’s support offered to our country through assistance projects in the field of training and expertise in developing strategic documents.

Radu Burduja thanked the British official for the training of the military students’ team that participated, for the second year in a row, in the “Cambrian Patrol” exercise organized in Wales, where they obtained the silver medal.

The Director of Euro-Atlantic Security Policy of the British Ministry of Defense appreciated the achievements in the modernization and professionalization of the defense institution and expressed the UK’s commitment to continue to provide support to the Ministry of Defense in the relevant areas of the security and defense sector.

The Moldovan-British defense cooperation started in 1999.
