Football Tournament to Commemorate Dniester Heroes



Chisinau, February 27, 2012 — The Ministry of Defense, in partnering with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Union of Independence War Veterans, organized Saturday, February 25, an indoor football tournament to commemorate the 1992 Dniester war heroes.

The commemoration event started with a commemoration meeting held in front of the Balti Police Station, where the commemorative plaques of three people from Balti who fought in the 1992 Dniester War. Then, the participants laid flowers to Stefan cel Mare Monument.

According to Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta, the Balti event is the first one of the few activities carried out by the Government authorities to mark the 20th anniversary since the Dniester War. The action is meant both to commemorate the heroes of war and remember those who defended the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova. The action also has an educative goal focusing mainly on the new generations.

“We should always speak about the heroism and courage of those who defended our homeland, and not only on the eve of commemoration events, because only in this way we will be able to overcome its consequences, educate new generations of real patriots who would contribute to the development of our country through their daily efforts”, Vitalie Marinuta stated.

Eduard Maican, head of the Union of Independence War Veterans, welcomed the Ministry’s of Defense initiative to carry out such kind of activities, both commemorating the heroic deeds of participants in war and educating the young generation. “Moreover, these events are a good occasion to meet former war comrades who live in different parts of the country”, Maican said.

The Balti tournament brought together teams of war participants from 10 districts of the country. The winner of the first tournament was the team of Dniester war veterans from Balti, followed by the teams of Falesti and Singerei districts. The organizers of the event agreed to invite teams from all the districts and cities of the country at the 2013 edition of the tournament.
