Reality of War in Documentary Photography

CHISINAU, February 29, 2012 — An exhibition of documentary photography dedicated to the 20th anniversary since the Dniester War opened Wednesday, February 29, at the Center of Military History and Culture.

The exhibition “La un pas de razboi, la un pas de pace” (One step toward war, one step toward peace) displayed over 100 documentary photos depicting faces and destinies of heroes dead in war.

The author of the exhibition, master of photography Tudor Iovu, stated the exhibition is an action to remember all the participants in the war for independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.

“I would put my life in danger every day, but risking is part of my profession. I am proud I had the opportunity to show the entire world what happened in Moldova, although I was shocked of what I saw in the battle field”, Tudor Iovu said.

Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta stated the photos displayed within the exhibition depict the painful history of our country. The name of those who sacrificed their lives for the welfare of our country will always live in our mind.

“This documentary photography exhibition describes the painful past of our national history. The Transdniestrian war is an episode which our public awareness and collective memory should never hide, falsify or decrease its significance. We need to understand and learn about all these moments and the lessons of the past, because only in this way we can build a better future for us”, the Defense Minister specified.

The exhibition of documentary photography “One step toward war, one step toward peace” is organized by the Center of Military History and Culture, in partnering with the Master of Photography Tudor Iovu and the publication “Adevarul”. The war photographer and reporter covered the most important events of war on hundreds of meters of movie line. The documentary photos taken on the first line of the conflict will be displayed for one month.

The photographer Tudor Iovu was born on October 5, 1948, in Ciopleni village, Criuleni. He graduated from the Moscow State University, Faculty of Photojournalism. In 1990, he started working with the Reuters Agency. He is the winner of the Great Award and the golden medal at FOTOARM-97 NATO Military Photography Contest.
