Multinational Exercise Kicks Off in Macedonia



CHISINAU, May 22, 2012 — The National Army contingent deployed to “Cooperative Longbow — Lancer 2012” multinational exercise in Macedonia attended the official opening ceremony of the applications Monday, May 21, in the Krivolak military training area.

The event brought together over one thousand service members from 13 countries, foreign defense attaches based in Macedonia and officials from the Allied Force Command from Madrid.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Cardona Torres, Commander of Madrid Allied Force Command, stated the goal of “Cooperative Longbow — Lancer 2012” exercise is to improve interoperability between NATO and partner countries, within the framework of Partnership for Peace program.

“Security and welfare may be insured only through the successful cooperation among countries. Cooperative Lancer —Longbow is designed to train, practice and promote interoperability of the Partnership for Peace countries in compliance with NATO standards”, the NATO official stated.

The leader of the National Army contingent, Maj. Oleg Fornea said the participation of the Moldovan servicemen in multinational exercises increases interoperability between the Moldovan army and other countries’ armies during peacekeeping operations.

“Our country should be always ready to deploy military men to international contingents. This fact will raise the credibility level of foreign partners in the National Army in particular, and Republic of Moldova in general. The National Army servicemen are ready to represent our country at the best possible level”, Maj. Fornea stated.

This year, “Cooperative Longbow — Lancer 2012” exercise consists of three phases: individual training, platoon collective training and the final stage — field training. The servicemen will engage in mountain patrol operations, border security maintenance exercises, etc.

Cooperative Longbow Exercise is designed to train a brigade-level headquarters operating within the framework of a NATO Crisis Response Operation. On the other hand, Cooperative Lancer Exercise is a training exercise aimed to improve capabilities in selected tactical tasks in support of crisis prevention, conflict resolution and post-conflict peace building.

The National Army deployed 36 servicemen to the exercise, including 10 officers for staff exercise and 26 servicemen for field exercise. The participating countries are as follows: Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Switzerland and Ukraine.

“Cooperative Longbow — Lancer 2012” Exercise is held May 17 to 31 in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
