International Day of UN Peacekeepers Marked in Chisinau



CHISINAU, May 29, 2012 — Moldovan officers deployed to United Nations-led (UN) operations are a tool of peace and not of war, Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta stated on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers marked Tuesday, May 29, at the Ministry of Defense HQ.

The Defense Minister pointed out that, as a UN member, the Republic of Moldova takes part in peace maintaining operations at the global level and the engagement of National Army servicemen in UN-led missions in Sudan, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire is a good proof of the commitment of state to promoting peace, stability and security.

“I appreciate the courage and professionalism of servicemen to help those affected by the consequences of war. I would like to congratulate all the military men that are currently engaged in UN-led missions thousands of kilometers far from home, as well as those who are back home from different UN missions”, the Minister of Defense stated.

The National Army military men started taking part in UN-led operations in 2003. From the legal point of view, they go to UN-led operations based on Law on Republic of Moldova’s participation in international peacekeeping operations" No. 1156 — XIV as of July 26, 2000.

70 Moldovan servicemen took part in different UN-led missions so far in: Cote d’Ivoire — 30 servicemen, Liberia — 23, Sudan — 13 and Georgia — 4. The National Army currently has eight officers engaged in UN-led missions in Cote d’Ivoire — 4, Liberia — 2 and Sudan — 2.

There are currently 120 thousand peacekeepers from 116 countries of the world involved in UN-led operations working in the most dangerous parts of the world. According to UN, the number of peacekeepers to sacrifice their life for peace exceeded 2,900. In 2011, 112 men and women died. In the first four months of this year, 27 peacekeepers died while serving the United Nations peacekeeping missions.

United Nations is an important world organization founded in 1945, after the Second World War. The organization currently has 192 member states. UN was founded based on the Charter of the United Nations concluded by its founders. According to this document, UN has the mission to maintain world peace, defend human rights, international cooperation and international law. The Headquarters of the organization is in New York.
