Military Students Win Defense Minister’s Cup
CHISINAU, August 23, 2012 — The team of Alexandru cel Bun Military Academy of the Armed Forces won the Defense Minister’s Cup within the second edition of a military skills competition.
According to Col. Oleg Ciulcov, Chief of Doctrine and Joint Training Division of the National army Main Staff, at the team contest, Alexandru cel Bun Military Academy won the first prize, followed by Fulger Special Forces Battalion and Moldovan Light Infantry Brigade.
During the awarding ceremony held on the territory of Alexandru cel Bun Military Academy, the Chief of Main Staff, Commander of the National Army, Brigadier Gen. Vitalie Stoian, handed out the cup to the winner. The second and the third position winner teams were awarded diplomas and medals.
The Commander of the National Army also awarded the special prize of the competition to Maj. Radu Turcan, who won the wrestle contest. The winner was also given a buck for his performance.
Col. Ciulcov specified that, during the Defense Minister’s Cup contest, the participants competed within nine contests, including six — in-contest tests and three — wrestling, rope pulling and tennis-ball, out of the contest.
The pentathlon contest was meant for men and it consisted of 100 meter distance running, pull ups, obstacle race, 3000 meter resistance running, and a general shooting exercise. On the other hand, women competed at military triathlon, that included abdominal exercises, gun shooting and 1000 meter distance running.
Moreover, as for the individual contest, the servicemen competed at obstacle race, hand grenade throwing, quick running with the gun and anti-gas mask, and others.
The Defense Minister’s Cup is held once a year. The goal of the competition is to improve sports skills and sports performance of the National Army servicemen.
This year, the competition brought together about 120 servicemen from 11 National Army units.
