Republic of Moldova – Partner of GPOI

Chisinau, October 1, 2012 — “Republic of Moldova was accepted as a partner of the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI)”, President of the Republic of Moldova, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Nicolae Timofti, stated during a meeting with the US Ambassador to Chisinau, William H. Moser.

Republic of Moldova will receive $1.6 million to develop the training infrastructure of the National Army and raise the effectiveness of our country’s engagement in international operations.

President Timofti thanked the American ambassador for the financial support provided within this project in term of training and modernization of peacekeeping units.

In his turn, US Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, William H. Moser, stated the USA appreciated the partnership with the Republic of Moldova pointing out the American party’s availability to assist our country’s efforts to develop its international peacekeeping capabilities. “The GPOI Program in Moldova is another sign of the long-standing cooperative relationship that we have with the Republic of Moldova and its Ministry of Defense. Our cooperation programs have made great advancements in areas such as defense reform, military education reform and now, in developing the capability of the Moldovan Army to support international peace and stability missions around the world”, the US Ambassador said.

Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta stated the money given by the US Government will be used for upgrading the infrastructure of Bulboaca Military Training Ground, bringing it up to international training standards for peacekeeping operations. “The program fulfils AIE’s responsibility according to which Moldovan should be both, a security supplier and consumer. We plan to renovate a multi-purpose military training ground designed to provide training courses for both, Moldovan and other countries’ military contingents”, Marinuta said.

Last June, one company of the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion and an EOD group were certified as “mission ready” for international peace support peacekeeping operations.
