Vitalie Marinuta Attends the South-Eastern Defense Ministerial (SEDM) Meeting



Chisinau, October 3, 2012 — Minister of Defense of the Republic of Moldova, Vitalie Marinuta, attends the annual South-Eastern Defense Ministerial (SEDM) meeting held October 2-4, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to the Chief of Defense Policy and Planning Directorate, LTC Vladimir Ababii, at the meeting, the officials will discuss about the SEDM projects, activities of the Political Military Steering Committee (PMSC) and the SEDM Coordination Committee (SEDM-CC).

The parties will also analyze the strategic review process of SEDM and the activities carried out by the South-Eastern Europe Brigade Multinational Peace Force from the last SEDM ministerial reunion.

The source said that, during the event, Vitalie Marinuta will also have some bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Georgia and the United States of America, where they will discuss some major issues of mutual interest related to the current situation of the defense cooperation area.

SEDM is a regional initiative comprising such countries as: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia, the United States of America, Turkey and Ukraine.

SEDM was established in 1996. It aims at enhancing regional political-military cooperation process and strengthening stability and security in South-Eastern Europe. Each year, SEDM organizes decision making meetings of Defense Ministers, as well as meetings of chiefs of main staffs for military consultations.

Moldova joined SEDM in 2003. Since then, it has been attending the Defense Ministers’ meeting as an observer.
