Reform of Security and Defense Sector Discussed by Decision Makers

Chisinau, February 14, 2013 — Decision making factors from a few government institutions met at the Ministry of Defense within the workshop on the support of the conclusion of the defense and security reform implementation process. The event will be held at the end of February at George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, Garmish, Germany.

US Ambassador to Republic of Moldova, William H. Moser, said decision makers from our country should be aware of the fact the reform of the security and defense sector is not only the Defense Minister’s responsibility. This problem also involves a variety of government institutions such as: Security Intelligence Service, Ministry of Interior Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Supreme Security Council. However, this is the responsibility of the Republic of Moldova Government. William H. Moser specified that all the parties should be aware of their role in joining their efforts to achieve this goal.

In his turn, Vitalie Marinuta thanked the US Ambassador for the support provided to the defense reform in general, and for the organization of the event in Germany. “The fact we are here today proves that government institutions realized the role of this area and I hope that by taking part in this workshop we will have a better understanding of what the security and defense sector is and, when back, we will accomplish the goals we established four years ago — the reform, which citizens of the Republic of Moldova will benefit from”, Minister Marinuta said.

The workshop to be held February 26-28, 2013, will bring together decision makers from the Supreme Security Council, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of interior, Security Intelligence Service, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Ministry of Finance, and the Public Policy Institute. The agenda of the event consists of the review of reform of the security and defense implementation measures, as well as the analysis of international experience in the implementation of strategies in this sector. The event will also present recommendations on the conclusion of strategic documents in the security and defense area in austere conditions.
