Protection of Human Health and Environment Discussed in Geneva


Chisinau, May 9, 2013 — LTC Mariana Grama, Chief of Ecological and Environment Protection Section of the National Army, attends within an official delegation of Republic of Moldova the Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, held within April 28 — May 10, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Today, during the round table “Synergy and implementation of conventions that govern chemicals and hazardous waste safety at the national, regional and global level”, Mariana Grama presented the national statement on pesticide waste management in Republic of Moldova, with a focus on the achievements and challenges of the project under consideration.

The goal of the event is to raise participants’ awareness on chemicals and wastes issues, encourage synergies among ministries at the national level.

The Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, held for the first time in a trilateral format brought together about 2,000 participants from over 160 countries. The event aims at strengthening cooperation and collaboration between the conventions, with a view to enhancing the effectiveness of their activities on protection measures against hazardous chemicals and waste.

Republic of Moldova is represented at this event by officials from the Ministry of Environment, Health Care, Agriculture and Food Industry.

Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions are multilateral environment agreements designed to protect human health and environment against chemicals and waste.
