National Army Servicemembers Trained in Obsolete Ammunition Breakdown and Disposal

CHISINAU, July 12, 2013 — Graduates of the training course in obsolete ammunition disposal of the National Army, conducted during July 9-11, within a project implemented in partnering with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), received their diplomas at Military Academy of the Armed Forces “Alexandru cel Bun”.

During the ceremony, Col. Andrei Sarban, Deputy Chief of National Army Main Staff for Resource Management, said that such courses contribute to the professional growth of specialists in the management of ammunition. “Within the courses conducted by foreign experts, our servicemembers train their skills in destroying obsolete ammunition in order to be always ready to act accordingly and follow all the conditions of maximum security in dangerous ammunition disposal”, Col. Sarban said. He appreciated the support provided for the implementation of the above project.

The ICRC ammunition expert, Colin King, appreciated the interest of National Army soldiers to exchange experience and learn aspects of ammunition disposal in compliance with international standards. “The course was short, but we worked hard. I am glad that Moldovan servicemembers demonstrated ambition and commitment to the learning process, which I would like to congratulate them for”, Colin King said.

According to the Head of Weapons and Ammunition Section of the Logistics Command, Maj. Andrei Camerzan, the course was conducted as part of the ammunition disposal project, carried out with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The project has a positive impact on the security of civilians and military personnel. “Experts were trained in ammunition disposal and breakdown of some particular types of air bombs. During the practical stage of the training, a variety of activities of dangerous ammunition disposal through explosion were demonstrated, which is a good way to save the explosive substance of the National Army”, Maj. Camerzan said.

The quoted source specified that 12 National Army servicemembers attended the training course. After that, they will be directly involved in ammunition breakdown process and their disposal afterwards.

The project is implemented in compliance with the Memorandum signed by the Ministry of Defense of Moldova and ICRC on April 24, 2013, on obsolete ammunition disposal. The project will be implemented until September 2013.

About 50 tons of dangerous obsolete ammunition will be destroyed within the above project.
