More Obsolete Pesticides to be Taken Out of the Country



CHISINAU, July 26, 2013 — An operational team of the National Army repacked, transported and stored today a over nine tons of obsolete pesticides from Calfa village, Anenii Noi district, as part of the project “Disposal of critical threats of pesticides”, conducted b the Ministry of Defense and Calfa Mayor’s Office.

The store house where obsolete chemicals, dating back to Soviet period were placed is situated in the center of the village, 10 meters far from the water well of Calfa.

According to the Head of Ecological and Environment Protection Section of Logistics Command, manager of NATO/PfP project on dangerous pesticide and chemicals disposal in Republic of Moldova, LTC Mariana Grama, these substances are a critical threat to the local population’s security.

The gathered pesticides will be taken to Poland and destroyed within NATO/Partnership for Peace Project on dangerous pesticides and chemicals disposal in Republic of Moldova.

During 2003-2008, the National Army staff repacked and evacuated over 60 tons of pesticides from about 18 villages of Anenii Noi district. About 40 tons of them were destroyed in France, as part of the Project “Management and Disposal of persistent organic pollutants”. Other nearly 20 tons are stored at the central district storehouse in Danceni, Ialoveni.
