Military Academy Wins Defense Minister’s Cup



Chisinau, October 31, 2014 — Students of Alexandru cel Bun Military Academy of the Armed Forces won the Defense Minister’s Cup. The second place winners were the servicemembers of the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion, being followed by the team of Special Forces Battalion Fulger.

It was Defense Minister Valeriu Troenco who handed the Cup to the winners and congratulated the participants on the successful performance in the competition. Valeriu Troenco specified that competitors’ participation in such sports events demonstrates their professional skills and physical condition.

Chief of Main Staff, National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Gorgan, who attended the awarding ceremony, said that for the National Army leadership the physical training of servicemembers and conscripts will always be a priority. The official said that to achieve this goal, good physical condition and ambition is required.

According to Col. Octavian Varzari, Head of Joint Training and Doctrine Directorate, 10 teams of 15 servicemembers each competed in triathlon, pentathlon, hand-grenade throwing, pistol shooting, weight lifting, 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) and 10,000 meters (32,810 feet) distance running.

The National Army Sports Competition was held at Alexandru cel Bun Military Academy of the Armed Forces within October 27-31.
