Moldovan Service Members Remember Soldiers who Died in Afghanistan



CHISINAU, February 15, 2015 — The National Army staff conducted a series of events in all the military garrisons in order to commemorate the victims of the Afghan War.

Minister of Defense, Valeriu Troenco, the Commanding Officer Corps, together with officials, war veterans and their families, attended the meeting held at “Feciorilor Patriei — sfinta amintire” Memorial from Riscani district of the capital city. They laid flowers at the monument and kept a moment of silence.

“Every year, we gather here to remember the soldiers who died in the tragic Afghan War, but also to honor those who came back alive”, said Valeriu Troenco.

The Ministry of Defense organized a meal of remembrance for the participants to the war in Afghanistan at “Feciorilor Patriei — sfinta amintire” Memorial. The service members from other garrisons of the country attended commemoration ceremonies in Balti, Cahul, Edinet, Floresti, Ungheni, Nisporeni, and Hincesti.

By Government Decree, the Ministry of Defense was responsible to organize and conduct the events dedicated to the Remembrance Day for soldiers who died in Afghanistan.

The official data show that about 12,500 Moldovan citizens participated in the 1979 — 1989 Afghan War. 301 of them were killed, four were declared missing and 257 were injured.
