Moldovan-Georgian Talks at the Ministry of Defense



CHISINAU, March 4, 2015 — Minister of Defense, Viorel Cibotaru, met today with a delegation of Georgia’s Ministry of Defense, led by Deputy Minister Levan Girsiashvili. The delegation pays a visit to the Republic of Moldova within March 3-5.

The officials discussed about the national defense and security sector, the current stage of military Moldovan-Georgian relations, and the prospective of strengthening the bilateral cooperation.

Viorel Cibotaru informed Levan Girsiashvili about the priorities of the Government and the new leadership of the Ministry of Defense. The Minister mentioned the defense and security sector reformation, the national security strategy adjustment, the National Army professionalization, the consolidation of social care measures for the soldiers, improvement of the legal and institutional framework, the development and reinforcement of new capabilities of the army for carrying out its constitutional missions.

Levan Girsiashvili congratulated Viorel Cibotaru on his appointment as Minister of Defense and expressed his confidence that the two institutions will identify new methods and projects for cooperation.

The Georgian delegation’s agenda comprises meetings with military and civilian officials from the Republic of Moldova including the Chief of Main Staff, National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Gorgan, Adviser to the President on National Defense and Security, Alexei Barbaneagra, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Valeriu Chiveri.

Also, talks will be conducted and a cooperation plan between the Ministries of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and Georgia will be signed.

An agreement on military cooperation was signed between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Defense of Georgia in October, 2014, in Tbilisi.
