War Veterans’ Day Celebrated in Tiganca



CHISINAU, April 29, 2015 — National Army servicemembers participate at the events organized by the Embassy of Romania to the Republic of Moldova to mark War Veterans’ Day, celebrated every year on April 29.

Thus, today, Deputy Minister of Defense, Ana Vasilachi, together with Ambassador of Romania to Moldova, Marius Lazurca, war veterans, and representatives of local public authorities, commemorated Romanian soldiers buried in the Romanian military cemetery in Tiganca, Cantemir district. “On War Veterans’ Day, we honor people who died on the battlefield, who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom and national dignity”, said Ana Vasilachi.

The participants at the event attended a religious ceremony and laid flowers on the graves of the Romanian soldiers.

Also, on April 30, 2015, the Centre of Military History and Culture from Chisinau will host the exhibition “Romania and Romanians in World War I”. The event will display photographs, archive documents, pictures and maps, which rebuild the events of the neutrality period of the Kingdom of Romania (1914-1916), as well as testimonies, photographs, pieces of newspapers describing the battles held after Romania had joined the war alongside the Triple Entente, and a series of materials regarding the end of the war. The exhibition also includes a section dedicated to the participation of writers in the war and memoirs, prose and poems about World War I.

There are 1,020 Romanian soldiers buried at Tiganca cemetery. Overall, in Republic of Moldova, there are 300 cemeteries where about 9,000 Romanian soldiers are buried.

War Veterans’ Day honors soldiers’ deeds in the defense of Romania’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and interests.
