Commander of US Army Europe at “Dragoon Pioneer 2016” (video)



CHISINAU, May 15, 2016 — Commander of US Army Europe (USAREUR), Lt. Gen. Frederick Benjamin Hodges, and acting Chief of General Staff, National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Cutie, attended today the Distinguished Visitors Day within “Dragoon Pioneer 2016” exercise, conducted at EOD Battalion “Codru” from Negresti, Straseni.

At first, the officials familiarized with the main activities of the exercise and visited the training sites, where American and Moldovan soldiers train together, such as: movement of the EOD vehicles towards the demining site, secure corridors through mine fields, EOD research, mine clearance, . They also visited the medical and logistics units of the exercise.

Later, Generals Hodges and Cutie went to Tiganesti monastery, where American and Moldovan EOD engineers are improving a road leading to the monastery. The reconstruction of 1.6 km of road is funded by “Spirit of America!” organization and is conducted within “Dragoon Pioneer 2016” exercise.

At the end of the visit, the Commander of US Army Europe stated: “It is a great opportunity for us to train with partners and to be with soldiers who are doing something to help” to improve the road to Tiganesti Monastery.

National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Cutie, mentioned that over the past two weeks, the Moldovan engineers had the opportunity to learn from the vast American EOD experience. “We had the possibility to share our experience and to learn from the experience of our American colleagues. We wish to continue the cooperation through joint exercises conducted both in Moldova and abroad”, said Gen. Cutie.

“Dragoon Pioneer 2016” exercise brings together National Army and US Army engineers and is conducted for the first time in Moldova, within May 3-20, 2016. During the exercise, 198 soldiers of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the US Army and 165 soldiers of the EOD Battalion, the 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion, as well as from Brigades 1, 2, and 3 of the National Army will train together.

“Dragoon Pioneer 2016” aims to insure the joint training of the EOD units and raise the level of interoperability between the two armies.
