National Defense Strategy Draft Assessed



CHISINAU, August 23, 2016 — Today, the members of the working group responsible for the development of the National Defense Strategy (NDS) presented the NDS draft to the security and defense experts from the associative and academic environment. The event was hosted by NATO Information and Documentation Center(IDC NATO) in Chisinau.

The activity aimed to increase the involvement of the civil society in the development of Moldova’s defense strategic documents.

During the meeting, participants debated the Strategy’s draft and exchanged information, opinions, and recommendations.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Aurel Fondos, presented the NDS draft, and mainly the document’s content, legal base, its importance, the development process, as well as the future actions.

The experts suggested adding improvements to some of the document’s chapters in order to make it suitable to the latest changes in the region, as well as in the Republic of Moldova.

Aurel Fondos specified that the recommendations will be analyzed by the working group members. They will adjust the document and will submit it for approval to the members of the State Committee for the development of the NDS at the next meeting in September.

On August 16, 2016, the Ministry of Defense presented the National Defense Strategy draft for public analysis. The document was developed by a cross-institutional working group consisting of representatives of 23 ministries and institutions with responsibilities in the defense sector.

The NDS is a policy document that establishes how to accomplish the state institutions’ defense goals.

The document defines the strategic context of the security environment, describes the sector’s current situation by identifying the defense risks and threats and displays the strategic view and the defense policy goals, the means and resources necessary for their achievement.
