Ministry of Defense Takes Action to Reduce the Risk of Corruption in the Institution

CHISINAU, September 28, 2016 — The Ministry of Defense established an Action plan on reducing the risk of corruption in the institution for 2016-2017.

The document approved by the Minister of Defense Anatol Salaru aims to reduce the risk of corruption in the institution, thus maintaining and consolidating the efficiency of the military and civil personnel within the central public authorities.

According to head of General Inspection Directorate, Col. Victor Pirtina, the action plan includes a series of concrete measures to counter corruption in the sector of democratic control and democratic commitment, the policies of the departments responsible for fighting corruption, staff policy, deontology, training, planning, and budget, as well as procurement.

The source specified that the action plan on reducing the risk of corruption in the Ministry of Defense for 2016-2017 was developed based on the recommendations of a NATO expert group. In 2015, the NATO experts analyzed the sector’s situation and sent the defense institution an assessment report on the integrity in Moldova’s defense and security sector containing some improvement proposals.

These actions are part of the NATO Program Building Integrity Initiative (BII) in the defense and security sector, which the Republic of Moldova joined in 2013. The Ministry of Defense is coordinating the BII Program on national level.
