National Army Engineer Battalion Celebrates 24th Anniversary (video)

CHISINAU, October 14, 2016 — “The 24-year-history of ‘Codru’ Engineer Battalion is filled with activities aimed to the unit’s consolidation, as well as participation in national and international demining missions, during which the National Army engineers proved that they have got a very good training”. The statement was made by National Army Commander, Brigadier Gen. Igor Cutie at the Unit’s Day celebration in Negresti, Straseni.

Gen. Cutie mentioned the demining of Pohrebea territory, the participation in the Iraq post-conflict relief operations, as well as the KFOR operation, where, currently, National Army engineers carry out peacekeeping missions.

Battalion’s Interim Commander, Maj. Gheorghe Racu, said that the unit’s engineers are conducting demining missions throughout Moldova, because of the risk of unexploded ammunition dating back to World War II. Thus, the source specified that, since the beginning of 2016, the engineer teams disposed of 573 explosive objects throughout the country. Maj. Racu also stated that, this year, the Engineer Battalion participated for the first time, together with the American colleagues, in “Dragoon Pioneer 2016” exercise. The goal of the exercise was the joint training of engineer units and to increase the interoperability level between the two armies.

The ceremony celebrating the Engineer Battalion’s anniversary included exhibitions of engineer vehicles, special equipment, and ammunition, as well as a musical program.

“Codru” Engineer Battalion was established on October 16, 1992.
