A New National Army Contingent Joins KFOR Operation



CHISINAU, December 4, 2017 — “Thanks to you the Republic of Moldova is among the countries contributing to the stability and security on the European continent and this fact makes all of us proud. You are creating a new, modern image of the National Army”. The statement was made by Prime Minister Pavel Filip during the deployment ceremony of the eighth National Army contingent to the KFOR Operation in Kosovo that was held today, at the Ministry of Defense HQ.

Pavel Filip specified that the NATO-led mission is an example of consolidation of the European continent, while for the Republic of Moldova is a chance to contribute to international security.

Ambassador of Italy in the Republic of Moldova, Valeria Biagiotti, mentioned that the National Army’s participation in the KFOR mission proves that Moldova whishes to promote peace and stability on international level. “Italy expresses its high appreciation for Moldova’s availability to participate in KFOR alongside the Italian contingent that has the mission to continue the important role of guaranteeing the regional sovereignty”, said the Ambassador.

Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza thanked the Italian and American partners, the Government, Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, as well as the citizens of the Republic of Moldova for the trust they put into the 40 service members of the KFOR-8 and into those almost 300 National Army officers and NCOs who, so far, have participated in the KFOR operation.

“All these service members, through their performance, proved that the defense institution has a well-trained peacekeeping potential that is harnessed today not only in Kosovo, but also in other missions where the army of the Republic of Moldova is serving alongside other countries’ armies, contributing to global security”, said Eugen Sturza.

The eighth National Army contingent consists of 40 service members, out of which seven engineers and a platoon of 33 service members that will carry out missions of security and guard of military facilities, as well as patrol missions.

The Moldovan service members will be part of Multinational Battle Group — West and will be stationed at the Italian military base Camp Villaggio from Pech village, Kosovo.

The mission of KFOR-8 contingent in Kosovo will last six months.
