Moldovan-Latvian Dialogue on Defense in Riga



CHISINAU, May 18, 2018 — Ministers of Defense of the Republic of Moldova and of Latvia, Eugen Sturza and Raimonds Bergmanis, reviewed the bilateral military cooperation during a meeting in Riga, on May 17.

Minister Sturza underlined the necessity to strengthen the bilateral relations of the two armies and to learn from Latvia’s experience in the process of reforming the defense sector in the Republic of Moldova.

Eugen Sturza also appreciated Latvia’s achievements in building the armed forces and the efficient integration of this country in the UE and NATO efforts of ensuring peace and security on the European continent. Minister Sturza expressed the interest of exchanging experience considering the National Army’s initiative of increasing its contribution to the EU efforts of ensuring international peace. The Ministers talked about the security context in the Eastern Europe and the necessity of joint efforts for facing the challenges of this sector.

Raimonds Bergmanis mentioned the availability of the Latvian Ministry of Defense to reinforce the defense cooperation between our countries. Minister Bergmanis highly appreciated Moldova’s participation in the KFOR operation and said that this type of cooperation has been useful for the Latvian armed forces as well.

While in Riga, Eugen Sturza met with Chairman of Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee of the Latvian Parliament, Ainars Latkovskis, and visited the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence.

The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Moldova is paying a visit to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania within May 14-19, 2018.
