Ministry of Defense and UN Women Moldova Strengthen Their Cooperation



CHISINAU, July 17, 2018 — The Ministry of Defense signed today a Memorandum of Understanding with UN Women Moldova.

The document was signed by State Secretary Valdimir Iliev and Acting Head of UN Women Moldova, Asya Varbanova, at the Ministry of Defense HQ. It includes a series of activities aimed to strengthen the cooperation between the two institutions regarding the implementation of the area of intervention “Gender equality in the defense and security sector” of the National Strategy on Ensuring Equality between women and men in the Republic of Moldova for 2017-2021.

According to Head of the Human Resources Development and Military Education Policy Directorate, Col. Alexandru Roman, UN Women will offer support in completing the National Program for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security” for 2018-2021 and the Action plan regarding its implementation through capacity building, policy advisory, cross-governmental normative support, advocacy and social mobilization, technical assistance for fundamental services, coordination of the assistance donated for the sector of ensuring gender equality.

The source added that the Ministry of Defense will offer human and technical resources necessary for conducting the activities and initiatives and will ensure an efficient cooperation with national and development partners.

Thus, the Ministry of Defense and UN Women will cooperate on the following objectives of the National Program for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security” for 2018-2021 and the Action plan regarding its implementation: to reduce the stereotypes associated with the role of women in the defense and security sector; to increase the opportunities for the men and women working in this sector to combine their professional and family lives; to prevent and fight discrimination, sexual harassment and violence related to gender; to develop an inclusive and proactive system of human resources management; to implement a reasonable adjustment and positive measures in the defense and security sector; to develop institutional capacities for integrating the gender dimension in the defense and security policies; and to support the participation of women in the process of peace consolidation and in peacekeeping missions.

The Memorandum was signed for a period of three years and can be subsequently extended for another two years.
