Moldovan-Austrian Meeting at Ministry of Defense



CHISINAU, September 11, 2018 — State Secretary Vladimir Iliev met today with military attaché of the Republic of Austria in the Republic of Moldova based in Kiev, Col. Erich Simbuerger, at the Ministry of Defense HQ.

The officials talked about the cooperation between the two armies and the prospects of strengthening it. They also discussed about the regional situation, the defense institution’s participation in international programs and initiatives, and the reform started by the Ministry of Defense related to the National Army’s professionalization.

In this regard, Vladimir Iliev informed the military attaché about the actions aimed to adjust the defense legal framework, the development and approval of strategic documents — National Defense Strategy and Military Strategy, and the measures undertaken for reinforcing the bilateral military relations with foreign partners.

The State Secretary also thanked the Austrian official for the support offered in enhancing the ammunition stockpile management within the National Army depots through the implementation of a large training project. Vladimir Iliev appreciated Austria’s support and contribution as leader-state of the multinational group of experts in the sector of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Conventional Ammunition (CA) that, so far, trained over 100 representatives of the National Army and other force structures, such as: Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Justice, and Security and Intelligence Service.

Col. Erich Simbuerger stated that, as military attaché of Austria, he will make every effort in order to strengthen the military cooperation between the two countries. The official also specified that he will continue to support the military institution’s reformation process and will offer the necessary support for future assistance projects.

The Moldovan-Austrian military cooperation has started in 2010.
