Defense Cooperation of the Republic of Moldova with NATO Discussed in Brussels

CHISINAU, November 6, 2018 — The cooperation of the Republic of Moldova with the North Atlantic Alliance and the assistance offered by the allied countries in the framework of developing and modernizing the National Army have been the main issues discussed by Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza with the Honorable Rose Gottemoeller, NATO Deputy Secretary General, on November 6, 2018.

During the meeting at NATO Headquarters, the two officials referred to the programs and projects supported by the Alliance in the Republic of Moldova that have the objective of transforming the defense and security sector and adjusting it to international standards.

In this regard, the Minister of Defense highlighted the support offered by NATO within the Defense Capacity Building Initiative (DCBI) including the adjustment of the legal framework and the expertise for the development of the National Defense Strategy and the Military Strategy that have been recently approved.

Eugen Sturza mentioned that another important step of our defense cooperation with the Alliance is the recent launch of the project “Building Capabilities in Military Medicine” that marks the start of the second phase of DCBI and provides for technical assistance and training for National Army’s military units and institutions.

The Minister of Defense also thanked for the training offers to NATO schools and specified that the training of National Army staff abroad is an important factor contributing to the achievement of one of the main objectives of the “Professional Army” Program — to intensify Moldova’s participation in peacekeeping operations and multinational exercises at home and abroad.

Rose Gottemoeller appreciated Moldova’s aspiration to consolidate and modernize its defense system and mentioned the Alliance’s availability to contribute to it through assistance projects and expertise.

Also today, Minister Eugen Sturza met with Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, Dr. Antonio Missiroli. The talks focused on the support offered by the Alliance in implementing certain projects on cyber defense and fighting biological risks, as well as through the Science for Peace and Security Programme.

Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza is paying an official visit to Brussels, Belgium, within November 5-7, 2018.
