Canadian Minister of Defense: ”People’s Resilience Is a Factor Ensuring State Security”

CHISINAU, November 18, 2018 — Minister of Defense Eugen Sturza met with his Canadian counterpart, Harjit Singh Sajjan, in the framework of the International Security Forum in Halifax, Canada.

The two officials talked about the development of the Moldovan and regional security environment, the challenges to our country’s security, comprising the hybrid threats, as well as the importance of joining efforts on international level in order to prevent and fight them.

During the meeting, the Minister of National Defense of Canada mentioned that the success of a democratic state depends, in good part, on the ability to get the population more actively involved in the joint efforts of ensuring security.

Harjit Singh Sajjan also appreciated the Moldovan soldiers’ contribution to the international efforts of ensuring peace and stability, especially by increasing the number of women within these missions. The Canadian Minister welcomed the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security” in our country, thus advancing the Republic of Moldova in the processes of involving women in the defense and security sector.

Minister Eugen Sturza highlighted the Canadian Government’s support, as a NATO member, in destroying anti-personnel mines, expired ammunition and a large quantity of mélange rocket fuel from the stockpiles of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova. Eugen Sturza specified that, this way, our country became one of the first states to implement the provisions of Ottawa Treaty on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction.

The officials agreed on continuing the cooperation in the security sector.
