The Victims of Chernobyl Disaster Commemorated by Service MembersCHISINAU, April 26, 2019 — The National Army staff attended the commemoration activities for the victims of the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear power plant that have been held throughout the country. In Chisinau, General State Secretary, Radu Burduja, attended the ceremony held at Chernobyl victims’ memorial from Botanica district. During the event, Radu Burduja mentioned that the nuclear disaster that happened in Chernobyl on April 26, 1986 was one of the most tragic nuclear catastrophes of the 20th century that affected over seven million people. The General State Secretary added that thanks to the courageous heroes who contributed to the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster’s consequences, today’s generation is living in a cleaner and safer world. The military garrisons’ personnel attended similar ceremonies in Edinet, Ungheni, Drochia, Cahul, and Balti. Over 3,500 Moldovan citizens, out of which 3,000 reservists, including 231 officers mobilized by military commissariats, 400 service members, 70 employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and 500 civilians participated in the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster’s consequences.
