UN Cooperation with the National Army Discussed at Ministry of Defense



CHISINAU, July 4, 2019 — Minister of Defense Pavel Voicu met today with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for the Republic of Moldova and United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator a.i., Dima Al-Khatib.

The talks included subjects related to the cooperation of the defense institution with UN and the organization’s support for the defense reform.

The officials mainly referred to the assistance project on the security sector reformation in the Republic of Moldova implemented within 2018-2020, the support offered to the Central Military Hospital and the Center for Preventive Medicine for the transparent procurement of modern equipment, the enhancement of security infrastructure at weapons and ammunition depots, the development of the Electronic State Registry of Mobilization Resources, the implementation of UN Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace, and Security” through UNDP and UN Women Moldova, the infrastructure rehabilitation and provision of modern equipment to military units.

In this regard, Pavel Voicu expressed his gratitude to the UNPD team for the assistance in developing and modernizing the defense sector and mentioned that, due to this support, the National Army will be able to build its capabilities and to fulfill its commitments on both national and international levels.

Dima Al-Khatib appreciated the performance of National Army service members who are contributing to global peace and security within UN peacekeeping and stabilization operations.

The UNDP Resident Representative for the Republic of Moldova added that the organization she is representing will continue to support the defense sector’s reformation through projects that are being implemented and other future projects in the areas requested by the Ministry of Defense.
